How to complete the purpose of your Police Check

Having trouble filling out the purpose section of your Police Check ? This step-by-step guide will help you complete each field correctly.


Step 1: Select Your Check Purpose

Choose the reason that best describes your application:

🏢 EMPLOYMENT

  • For existing or new employment roles
  • Exception: Don't use for Commonwealth Government jobs (use COMMONWEALTH instead)

📋 PROBITY

  • For "fit and proper" person checks
  • Common uses: Board member roles, work experience, fostering, not-for-profit positions, corporate probity roles

📄 LICENCE

  • When required for licensing applications
  • Examples: Firearms licence, financial services licence, liquor/gaming licence

🏛️ COMMONWEALTH

  • Specifically for employment with Australian Commonwealth Government agencies

Step 2: Position Title, Occupation, Entitlement, or Licence Type

This must align with your selected purpose above.

If You're Currently Unemployed

Specify the roles or industry you're hoping to work in. If applying for multiple roles, choose the main one or be specific about your primary target.

Examples by Category

Position Titles:

  • Disability Support Worker, Sales Consultant, Team Leader
  • Warehouse Manager, Security Guard, Plant Operator

Occupations:

  • Plumber, Electrician, Nurse, Miner
  • Consultant, Accountant, Aged Care Worker, Truck Driver

Entitlements:

  • Application for adoption, membership of an organisation, teacher registration

Licence Types:

  • Firearms Licence, NDIS Clearance, Financial Services licence
  • Hotel Liquor Licence Applications, Plumbing licence

Step 3: Employer, Organisation, or Licence Authority

Enter the name of your:

  • Prospective employer
  • Organisation name
  • Licence or application issuing authority

If unemployed: Enter the industry or organisations you're applying to. Be specific and pick the main one if you're applying to multiple places. Alternatively enter 'General Employment' if you are applying for jobs, but do not have a specific employer in mind.

Important: This must align with the purpose you selected in Step 1.


Step 4: Location (City/Town)

Enter the city or town where your role is (or will be) located.

Multiple locations? You can only select one. Choose the primary or most likely city/town where you'll be working.


Step 5: Location (State)

Enter the state or territory where your role is (or will be) located.

Multiple states or travel required? You can only select one. Choose your primary state or home state where you'll be based. If you might be based overseas then select 'ACT' as the state'
